“Blessings to doing the right thing”: The netizens respond to hawker finding diner that overpaid 100 times

Hawker’s Honesty Shines After Customer Pays 100 Times More for Noodles

A heartwarming story has emerged from Singapore’s vibrant hawker scene, capturing the attention of many. Last Saturday, January 28, Khine Zar Lin, the owner of Xiao Mei Ban Mian, took to Facebook to share an incredible incident where a customer accidentally paid $450 for a bowl of mee hoon kueh that normally costs just $4.

Community Spirit in Action

The stall, located at Woodlands Drive 50, serves delicious noodles that are a staple for many Singaporeans. Khine, 34, revealed that about 50.7% of her customers are women, and she expressed her concern for the elderly customer who might not know how to rectify the situation. “Please help spread the word,” she urged, hoping the customer would realize the mistake and reclaim his money.

On January 31, Khine shared with AsiaOne that she had transferred $445 back to the customer using Nets. She mentioned that the process was quite challenging and required a lot of paperwork. Many netizens praised her for her honesty, with one commenting, “Blessings to do the right thing.”

A Lesson in Technology

Khine empathized with the customer, who was around her age and had just started using PayLah. She noted that not everyone is tech-savvy, and it’s possible he didn’t understand how to verify his payment. “We just want to help him get his money back,” she said.

Kindness Among Hawkers

This incident is a reminder of the kindness that exists within our hawker community. Recently, a Malay stall owner at Circuit Road offered free tea and coffee to customers during Chinese New Year, creating cherished memories. A Facebook user remarked, “This is the true kampung spirit of this old neighborhood.”

In November 2013, another generous hawker treated 100 seniors to complimentary meals, showcasing the heartwarming tradition of giving back that is so prevalent in our society.

Building a Stronger Community

This uplifting story not only highlights the integrity of hawkers like Khine but also reinforces the importance of kindness in our community. It shows that there are still helpful and compassionate individuals among us, fostering trust and encouraging others to lend a hand to those in need.
