In a Facebook post on January 22, Chee shared that after listening to feedback from the public, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) have decided to extend the current card-based ticketing (CBT) system for adult commuters. This means the planned phase-out in 2024 is off the table for now.

Why the Change?

Initially, the LTA had set a deadline for the CBT system to end on June 1, urging commuters to switch to SimplyGo, an account-based ticketing (ABT) platform. However, many users faced challenges with the SimplyGo app, including slow performance and difficulties in upgrading their cards. Although a software update on January 11 fixed some issues, concerns about the necessity of switching to SimplyGo lingered.

Chee acknowledged these frustrations and apologized for the inconvenience caused. He emphasized that better planning could have prevented the hiccups during the transition. Many commuters prefer to see their fare deductions and card balances displayed at fare gates and bus card readers, which is a familiar practice.

The Benefits of SimplyGo

While the CBT system will remain in place for now, Chee highlighted the advantages of the SimplyGo system. With SimplyGo, your fare value is stored in your account rather than on the card itself, reducing the risk of losing money if you misplace your card. Additionally, SimplyGo allows for the use of bank cards and mobile wallets, with around 40% of adult commuters already opting for these methods.

However, retrieving fare information at gates may take a few seconds longer, which could lead to delays during peak hours. Chee pointed out that there is currently no technical solution to speed up this process, but the LTA is looking into ways to enhance the user experience.

What’s Next for SimplyGo?

For those who purchased or converted to SimplyGo cards between January 9 and January 22, you can switch back to your ez-link and Nets FlashPay cards without any extra charges. This also applies to concession card holders who made the switch by January 22. The LTA plans to release more details about the card exchange by the end of February.
