Bukit Batok Coffee Shop Mini Hotpot Mishap: Gel Fuel Top-Up Leads to Explosive Incident

Shocking Hotpot Incident at Bukit Batok Coffee Shop

Imagine enjoying a hearty fishball noodle hotpot at your favourite coffee shop, only to be startled by flames shooting out of your mini hotpot! This was the reality for Wei Yuqin, a teacher who had just ordered her lunch at Block 155, Bukit Batok Street 11, last Friday.

A Lunch to Remember

Wei noticed that the flames in her hotpot were dying down and requested the stall assistant to add more gel fuel. Despite her warning about the potential dangers, the assistant poured the fuel directly on top of the lit burner. This led to a sudden ‘explosion’ of flames that ignited Wei’s belongings. Thankfully, nearby diners quickly sprang into action and managed to extinguish the fire, ensuring that no one was hurt.

Learning from Mistakes

Wei shared that during her previous visits, the gel fuel was always added slowly from the side of the burner, making this incident particularly alarming. She hopes that the stall will take this as a learning opportunity and educate their staff on the proper procedures for handling gel fuel.

The assistant, Guo, expressed regret over the incident, explaining that it was his first time refilling the fuel for customers and he was unaware of the safety risks involved. He apologised to Wei and promised to avoid handling gel fuel in the future.

Stall Owner’s Response

The stall owner, known as Huang, acknowledged the oversight and mentioned that they had never topped up gel fuel for customers while they were eating before. Huang assured that Wei had been refunded and that they would be more cautious with fuel handling moving forward.

Importance of Safety Training

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the need for proper training and safety protocols in food establishments. Stall owners should prioritise educating their employees on safe handling practices to prevent accidents and ensure customer safety.

Steps to Enhance Safety

  • Conduct regular safety drills and training sessions to prepare employees for emergencies.
  • Implement clear guidelines for handling gel fuel and other potential hazards.
  • Perform thorough risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential dangers.

By fostering a culture of safety and preparedness, food establishments can create a safer environment for both employees and customers. How can stall owners ensure their staff is well-equipped to handle emergencies? Regular training and clear communication are key to preventing future incidents.
