In a bold move to combat theft, a gift shop owner in Chinatown has decided to name and shame shoplifters. The store, located on Trengganu Street and known as Wow, has recently made headlines on Xiaohongshu for displaying over 20 photos of individuals accused of stealing from their shelves.
Persistent Theft Issues
An employee from Wow shared with Shin Min Daily News that theft has been a recurring problem since the shop opened last November. Both tourists and locals have been caught on camera taking items without paying. “Something goes missing every week,” she revealed. In fact, there are days when theft occurs two or three times!
The employee noted that many of the individuals whose photos are posted are locals and repeat offenders. For instance, just last month, a young female tourist was seen swiping a pair of glasses. She took two pairs from the shelf, hid one in a hat near the counter, and left with the other after telling the owner she didn’t want the second pair.
Surprising Incidents
Another incident happened during Chinese New Year. An elderly woman with a cart entered the shop just before closing time. While browsing near the portable fans, she managed to sneak out with two pairs of glasses. Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, it became clear that if she hadn’t been interrupted, she might have taken the fans too. To cover her tracks, she even messed up the display of glasses.
The employee expressed frustration, saying, “We’re just trying to run a business, and it’s exhausting to deal with so many incidents.”

The shop owner, known as Lei, explained that posting the photos of the alleged shoplifters was a way to alert the public and seek help in identifying the culprits. The losses from stolen goods amount to about $100 monthly. “We shared those photos before Chinese New Year when there were more shoppers,” she mentioned, hoping to encourage the public to be more vigilant.
Despite facing skepticism about the authenticity of the photos, Lei insisted she has evidence of thefts involving various items, including spectacles, necklaces, and bracelets. Cory Wong, director of Invictus Law Corporation, pointed out that while Lei’s intentions are understandable, publicly labeling individuals as thieves could be contentious.

According to the police’s annual crime brief for 2023, there were 3,939 shop theft cases, marking a 21% increase from 2022. Shop theft accounted for 19.7% of all physical crime cases that year. Retail outlets such as department stores, supermarkets, and convenience stores were the most affected, with stolen items typically including food, beverages, personal care products, and clothing.
In April, the police urged the public to refrain from committing shop theft, highlighting the risks of being caught due to surveillance technology like CCTV cameras. They also encouraged retailers to join the Shop Theft Awareness for Retailers (STAR) program to evaluate vulnerabilities and implement crime prevention measures.
