Female pays $18k for Far East Plaza nail shop, but the same unit is available on PropertyGuru a few weeks later

Dreams Dashed: A Cautionary Tale of a Nail Salon Venture

Lim Shi Yue had always dreamed of opening her own nail salon. When she spotted a unit at Far East Plaza, her excitement soared. However, what started as a dream quickly spiraled into a nightmare, costing the 29-year-old and her business partner a whopping $20,000.

The Alluring Opportunity

In December, Lim came across an advertisement on Carousell for the shop unit. She was eager to connect with the owner, a Thai woman residing in Singapore. This woman also ran several Thai food stalls, which added to Lim’s confidence in the venture. After meeting in person, Lim and her partner paid a total of $18,000 in two transactions—$13,000 and $5,000—to secure the store.

They also forked out $1,800 for Lim’s levy and the room rental of two Thai employees, plus an additional $3,500 for January’s rent. Lim believed everything was set for a smooth transition.

The Shocking Revelation

Things took a turn when Lim discovered that the Thai employees had migrant domestic worker permits, meaning they were not legally allowed to work in the salon. When Lim confronted the owner about this deception, she was met with accusations of dishonesty and demands for more fees. The owner insisted that Lim should not worry about the workers and demanded an additional $7,000 for the shop’s security deposit.

Feeling trapped, Lim reluctantly agreed to the extra payment but soon found herself locked out of her own shop. To her dismay, the salon owner refused to transfer the tenancy and suggested Lim find another buyer instead.

Unexpected Twists

As if that wasn’t enough, Lim later discovered that she had paid $18,000 to a PropertyGuru agent for the listing. When she returned to the shop, she was furious to find that her lock had been changed, leaving all her personal belongings trapped inside.

Lim expressed her frustration, stating, “I have a steady flow of revenue. I can show you my records. They may not tell the whole story, but they reflect our hard work.” This was their first venture into the beauty industry, and they were passionate about nails and beauty. Unfortunately, their encounter with the Thai owner turned out to be a costly lesson.

A Lesson for All Singaporeans

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for Singaporeans venturing into business with foreigners. It underscores the importance of thorough research and due diligence. Cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings, so it’s crucial to have everything documented to avoid disputes.

Lim and her partner have since filed a police report, hoping to seek justice for their unfortunate experience. As they navigate this challenging situation, their story reminds us all to tread carefully in business dealings, ensuring we protect our hard-earned money and dreams.
