It was around 9:30 PM when Sahar picked up a 59-year-old passenger at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3. She requested to be dropped off near Parkway Parade. As he navigated the roads towards Kallang, things took a turn for the worse.
According to Shin Min Daily News, the driver followed his GPS directions diligently, taking him through Marymount Road and Toa Payoh Avenue 2. Despite minor roadworks along the way, traffic was smooth. However, as they neared their destination, the passenger became increasingly agitated.
Words Escalate to Violence
In an attempt to communicate, Sahar spoke to her in English, but she reacted aggressively, striking him on the back and arm. “It gave me a shock,” he recounted, feeling bewildered by the sudden outburst. After stopping the car, he noticed that she had calmed down but was still muttering to herself.
Upon reaching Toa Payoh Central, Sahar opened the door to let her out, but not before enduring more verbal abuse in Mandarin. He later discovered two small scratches on his arm, likely from her nails during the altercation. These scratches, measuring about four centimetres, were still visible a day later.
Reporting the Incident
Sahar took the necessary steps to report the incident to the police and lodged a complaint with Grab. The police confirmed they received a report, while Grab reassured that they would continue to support their drivers and customers amidst these challenges.
