How a determined F-15 WSO fighter overcame gender bias to join RSAF: Her inspiring story

Chasing Dreams: Singaporean Air Force Officers Soar High Despite Challenges

In the heart of Darwin, Australia, dreams take flight for Singapore’s brave air force officers. Captain Hannah Teo, a Weapons System Officer (WSO) from 149 Squadron, has always had her eyes set on the skies. But her journey to the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) wasn’t without its hurdles.

Overcoming Doubts

From a young age, Hannah was captivated by fighter jets, especially during the National Day Parade (NDP) flyovers. However, she faced a significant challenge: convincing her father to support her ambition. Initially, he had reservations about her joining the air force simply because she is a girl. But Hannah’s passion shone through. After joining the RSAF in 2016, she gradually eased her father’s concerns with each training session and exciting stories she shared about her experiences.

Now, her family sends her care packages filled with local snacks and instant noodles to remind her of home while she participates in multinational exercises like Exercise Pitch Black (XPB), hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Despite the distance, regular FaceTime calls keep them connected, providing comfort and support.

Supporting Each Other from Afar

As Hannah takes on her role as an F-15SG WSO, she aims to sharpen her skills and contribute to the RSAF’s mission. Another officer, Captain Nyang Bing Ru from 143 Squadron, also faces challenges during XPB. He’s currently away from his pregnant wife in Singapore. Nyang, an F-16 fighter pilot, had to persuade his wife about the importance of participating in the exercise, highlighting how it showcases Singapore’s capabilities to the world.

Though hesitant at first, Nyang’s wife understood the significance of his role and supported his decision. Their journey together, shaped by the opportunities provided by the air force, has strengthened their bond. As they prepare to welcome their child, Nyang promises to be there for his wife during doctor visits and surprise her with a special gift upon his return.

Passion for Aircraft Maintenance

Sakthi Jesh, a 24-year-old Air Force Engineer from 805 Squadron, is another inspiring figure. His passion for aircraft began during his studies in Aerospace System and Management at Nanyang Polytechnic. Joining the RSAF allowed him to turn that passion into a fulfilling career, despite initial concerns from his parents about him being away as their only child.

Sakthi’s dedication and growth in his role have eased his parents’ worries. Building strong relationships with fellow RSAF personnel and staying connected with his family has helped him navigate the challenges of overseas assignments. While he may miss significant family events during his time away, Sakthi ensures to celebrate their achievements and cherish moments together upon his return.
