“It was as if my car was so valuable”: A man praises the car washing staff who are intellectually handicapped for their impeccable carwash service

Unexpected Kindness at Telok Blangah’s Carwash

In a bustling city like Singapore, we often take everyday services for granted. But one man’s visit to a carwash turned into a heartwarming experience that reminded him of the power of kindness. Jerome Joseph recently shared his delightful encounter with the staff at the Petrol Station car wash in Telok Blangah on Facebook, and it’s a story that’s capturing hearts.

A Simple Wait Transformed

While waiting for his car to be washed, Jerome found himself reading the newspaper. Little did he know that this mundane moment would soon become memorable. As he sat in his car, he noticed the staff members smiling and waving at him. Their cheerful demeanor was infectious, prompting him to smile back and wave in return.

“I’ve never felt so acknowledged at a car wash before,” Jerome, a 49-year-old professional speaker, expressed. This was his first visit to this particular carwash, despite living nearby. The warmth of the staff made him feel appreciated, turning a routine task into a delightful experience.

Discovering a Meaningful Cause

Jerome later discovered that the carwash is operated by the Movement of Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), in partnership with the Singapore Petroleum Company (SPC). He described his experience as “humbling,” noting that he hadn’t realized the significance of the MINDS logo outside until after his visit.

“I see them as people doing great work,” he said, highlighting the importance of recognizing the efforts of those with special needs. His heartfelt post resonated with many netizens, who expressed their gratitude and even pledged to visit the carwash to support this worthy cause.

Supporting Employment and Inclusion

Minds Wash has been providing employment opportunities since 2004, aiming to integrate individuals with intellectual disabilities into society. The facility, managed by around 20 dedicated employees, offers car cleaning services ranging from $4 to $12, depending on the vehicle type. This initiative not only provides a source of income for its workers but also serves as an educational platform for the public about the capabilities of individuals with disabilities.

As Jerome concluded, he plans to return to the carwash regularly, supporting a cause that promotes kindness and understanding in our community. His story serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can leave a lasting impact.
