Little India resident charges neighbours with partying until 3am weekends and playing cat-and mouse game with police

Weekend Noise Woes: A Singaporean Dilemma

Imagine looking forward to a peaceful weekend after a long week at work, only to be jolted awake by loud noises from your neighbours. This is the reality for 44-year-old Jade, who has been facing this issue almost every weekend.

Late-Night Disturbances

Jade lives near Race Course Road, where her neighbours, who reside above a wellness centre, often return home late on weekends. From around 11pm to 3am, groups of four to eight people gather in the back alley, causing a ruckus that disrupts the peace. This year, the noise has been particularly unbearable, leading to frequent calls to the police.

Jade shared that her family often has to leave their beds in the early hours due to the loud commotion. Despite their efforts to close all windows to block out the noise, it hasn’t been very effective since their apartment faces the alley.

Impact on the Community

The disturbances are not just a nuisance for Jade and her family; they also affect elderly neighbours and children trying to get a good night’s sleep. Jade mentioned, “We’ve even been taking care of a friend’s dog while they are away, and the noise makes it even harder to manage.”

Confronting the noisy neighbours is not an option for Jade. “It’s easier to ignore them,” she says. The groups often seem intoxicated, and she fears for her safety if she were to confront them directly.

Seeking Help from Authorities

After enduring this situation for years, Jade decided enough was enough and contacted the Rochor Neighbourhood Police for assistance. She praised the police for their quick response, but noted that the rowdy neighbours appeared to be aware of the patrols. “They have a system where the only woman in the group signals the men to retreat into the building when the police arrive,” she explained.

While the police do their best to manage the situation, Jade feels their hands are tied. “They can only remind residents to keep the noise down,” she lamented.

A Call for Community Awareness

This ongoing issue highlights a serious problem affecting the quality of life for many residents in the area. While the police are doing their best, community awareness is crucial for finding a solution.

The government could collaborate with the media to shed light on this issue and explore measures to reduce disturbances. Additionally, community programs could be established to foster better relations among residents and promote a more peaceful living environment.
