Tan and his friend hopped on their motorbikes for a late-night feast in Johor Bahru on January 6. They planned to be back in Singapore within a few hours. But while they were at a petrol station convenience store, Tan suddenly realised his passport was missing.

Tan was also told to file a police report. However, heavy rain made it impossible for him to get to a police station without a raincoat. So, he and his friend decided to spend the night at the convenience store, hoping the rain would let up.

As morning broke, they checked into a hotel to freshen up. Tan was anxious about how he would get back home without his passport. They finally filed a police report on Sunday evening, but there was still no word from the Consulate-General.
