An 82-year-old woman, known as Weng, visited a salon near Bedok MRT station for a simple scalp treatment. Little did she know, she would end up spending a staggering amount. According to Shin Min Daily News, Weng had $4,760 more in her bank account at the start of the year, but that quickly changed.

It wasn’t until her daughter and son-in-law checked her bank statements that they discovered the shocking truth. Weng had unknowingly purchased a package for 20 treatments, a decision she couldn’t recall making. “I just wanted to wash my hair,” she told her family.

The situation escalated when Weng made an initial withdrawal of $3,000 from her ATM card, followed by another $1,800 shortly after. Her son pointed out that Weng, who is deaf and hard of hearing, may not have fully understood the salon’s sales pitch.

Despite the family’s attempts to resolve the issue with the salon, they were informed that the funds had already been allocated for staff wages, making a refund nearly impossible. The manager claimed that Weng had agreed to a $238 package for four sessions, but her son was left frustrated, insisting that the salon’s records should clarify the situation.

Case 2: The $40,000 Beauty Package

In a separate incident, a 70-year-old woman was lured into spending $40,000 on beauty treatments after receiving a flyer. Initially, she went for a $18 massage at People’s Park Centre, but the staff upsold her on additional services without confirming the costs.

Before she knew it, she had signed up for $2,000 worth of packages, convinced by claims of health issues like blocked breast ducts and poor blood circulation. Ultimately, she ended up spending $8,000 on a breast-care package and another $12,000 on herbal treatments. It wasn’t until she began to question the charges that she realized something was amiss and reported the incident to the Consumers Association of Singapore.
