Next stop: Serangkoon: The ‘Glitch’ on MRT train displays tickles netizens

North East Line Train Display Glitch: What Happened?

On Thursday, commuters on the North East Line faced an unexpected surprise when the train’s display monitor went haywire. AsiaOne reached out to SBS Transit for clarification. Grace Wu, the President of Customer Experience and Communications at SBS Transit, confirmed that the train was taken out of service promptly after staff identified the issue. She assured passengers that the transit company is actively investigating the glitch and apologised for any disruption it may have caused.

When Glitches Become a Laughing Matter

While MRT hiccups can be frustrating, they sometimes lead to amusing moments. Social media users found humour in a “malfunctioning” LED display on a North East Line train, which was shared on Instagram and Reddit. Instead of displaying the correct station names, the screen hilariously showed ‘Serangoon’ as ‘Serangoon’ and ‘Boon Keng’ as ‘Bolo Kenne.’

Some netizens speculated whether these images were altered or simply misdiagnosed. One Reddit user even joked about the situation, comparing it to characters from Marvel and DC movies. Others chimed in, suggesting that the issue might have stemmed from a simple connection problem rather than anything malicious.

Travel Smart Rewards: A Confusing Incident

In a separate incident, a video surfaced online showing a man at Outram Park Station in 2019 who tapped in but didn’t tap out. This led to questions from netizens about whether he was taking advantage of the Land Transport Authority’s Travel Smart Rewards program. This initiative allows commuters to earn points for weekday rides on the LRT or MRT, which can later be redeemed for cash rewards.

However, the LTA clarified that this situation arose during a testing phase by Nets for their SimplyGo trial, not from any wrongdoing by the commuter.

Addressing Commuter Inconveniences

These incidents highlight the challenges commuters face in their daily routines. So, how can we make public transport smoother for everyone in Singapore?

– **Enhanced Public Transport Options**: The government could consider expanding public transport services to ensure that everyone can travel conveniently.
– **Flexible Work Hours**: Companies might explore offering more flexible working hours, allowing employees to better manage their time and avoid peak travel periods.

By addressing these issues, we can help ease the daily commute for everyone in our bustling city.
