Off-duty Auxiliary Cop Arrested with Loaded Gun on Victoria Street – What Happened Next Will Shock You

Auxiliary Police Officer Arrested for Firearm Negligence at Changi Airport

A 27-year-old auxiliary police officer found himself in hot water after failing to return his service revolver, ammunition, and baton following his shift at Changi Airport. The incident unfolded on Thursday, May 9, when Certis alerted the police around 9:50 PM that the officer had not returned his firearms.

CCTV footage showed him changing out of his uniform and leaving work with a fully loaded Taurus revolver containing five bullets. He also had a speed revolver with another five bullets and a baton tucked away in a pouch.

Massive Search Operation

More than 100 police officers from various units were mobilized to locate the officer. He was eventually found loitering at a mall on Victoria Street just past midnight. Thankfully, he did not resist arrest or attempt to reach for his weapon. All of the equipment issued to him was successfully recovered.

The officer is set to face charges in court on May 11 for unlawfully carrying a firearm, which could lead to a prison sentence of five to 14 years, along with at least six strokes of the cane. Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police (DC) Zhang Weihan expressed concern, stating, “The individual involved has shown a blatant disregard for the law and abused the firearms entrusted to him.”

Commitment to Public Safety

The police will not tolerate actions that jeopardize public safety. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is dedicated to maintaining safety and security at all times. In an interview with The Straits Times, Zhang explained that the decision to keep the incident under wraps was made to enhance the chances of apprehending the officer without incident.

Certis issued a statement the following day, revealing that their automated arms management system flagged the officer’s failure to return his firearm. A spokesperson reassured the public of their commitment to promptly addressing such incidents, including implementing a warning system for unreturned firearms. The officer has since been suspended, and Certis will work closely with the police during the investigation to uphold safety protocols.

Importance of Responsibility in Firearm Handling

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsibility and accountability when it comes to handling firearms. It opens the door for organizations to reinforce strict protocols and training for their personnel to prevent similar occurrences.

To enhance safety measures, organizations should consider the following points:

  • Specificity in Protocols: Clearly outline protocols and procedures for responsible firearm handling. Regular training sessions and mandatory safety checks can help ensure compliance.
  • Inclusive Training: Provide comprehensive training for all personnel, regardless of their role or experience. This promotes a culture of responsibility and awareness.
  • Accountability Measures: Establish regular audits and transparent reporting mechanisms to ensure adherence to protocols and address any lapses promptly.
  • Community Engagement: Engage with the community to raise awareness about firearm safety through outreach programs, workshops, and partnerships with local law enforcement.

Refining Strategies for Improvement

It’s commendable that organizations are looking for ways to improve responsibility and accountability in firearm handling. Here are some questions to consider for further enhancing your strategies:

  • Specificity in Protocols:

    • Have you identified specific gaps in current protocols?
    • How often will training sessions occur, and how will you ensure everyone participates?
    • What measures will you implement to enforce consequences for negligence?

  • Inclusive Training:

    • How will you tailor training for different roles and experience levels?
    • Will there be refresher courses to maintain skills over time?

  • Accountability Measures:

    • Who will conduct audits and ensure compliance?
    • How will you encourage personnel to report concerns?
    • What steps will you take to address protocol lapses effectively?

  • Community Engagement:

    • Have you identified target groups for outreach programs?
    • How will you measure the effectiveness of community engagement efforts?
    • Are there existing partnerships that can enhance these initiatives?

By addressing these considerations, organizations can proactively work towards preventing similar incidents and fostering a culture of safety and responsibility in firearm handling.
