Otters on the Prowl: A Shocking Incident in Bukit Timah
A recent incident in Bukit Timah has left a homeowner devastated after otters invaded her property and decimated her prized koi fish. This unusual event serves as a wake-up call for all of us to be more vigilant about our surroundings.
A Disturbing Discovery
On the morning of December 6, a woman named Dai received alarming news from her domestic worker. During a routine walk near their pond, Dai and her husband stumbled upon two koi heads floating in the water, surrounded by a pool of blood. Tragically, more than 20 of their koi fish had perished, some with their stomachs emptied, while others were left headless. The only survivor was injured and in distress.
Dai revealed to 8world that these ornamental koi were imported from Japan and valued at around $50,000. Unfortunately, her CCTV camera failed to capture the incident, leaving her uncertain about the identity of the culprits. Based on the condition of the fish, she suspects otters were responsible. Dai believes these agile animals may have climbed over nearby water pipes or plants to access her property.
Preventive Measures Fall Short
Dai’s husband had previously taken precautions by mending gaps in the fence after hearing about otter attacks from their neighbours two months ago. Sadly, these efforts proved ineffective. Despite living in the area for over 30 years, Dai had never encountered an otter attack or even spotted one in Hougang.
After the incident, Dai promptly contacted the National Parks Board (NParks) and the Animal Response Centre. They informed her that this was the first reported otter attack in the region. NParks advised her to secure the gate with mesh to prevent future intrusions. Understandably, Dai is now traumatized and fears for the safety of her remaining koi. She has decided against raising fish again in the near future.
Community Concern
Dai’s neighbours share her concerns. One neighbour expressed sadness over the state of the koi, noting that the fish pond is located in an inner courtyard, a fair distance from the fence. While the community is worried, they feel helpless in preventing otters from entering their properties.
Inquiries made by AsiaOne revealed that NParks has no plans to cull the otters. Instead, they recommend homeowners build otter-proof barriers and secure any gaps with mesh.
A Lesson in Vigilance
This unfortunate event serves as a reminder for all of us to be more aware of our surroundings. It highlights the importance of creating a safe environment, not just for ourselves but also for our pets and neighbours.
As we navigate our daily lives, let’s keep an eye out for each other and take proactive steps to ensure safety in our communities.
