Voltage Fluctuations in Potong Pasir: A Shocking Experience for Residents
Residents of Potong Pasir faced an unexpected shock when voltage fluctuations wreaked havoc on their electrical appliances. This incident, which occurred on October 13 at Block 102 Potong Pasir Ave 1, was primarily caused by a termite infestation affecting a backup cable at the local substation, as reported by Shin Min Daily News.
Frustration Among Residents
A total of 41 households were impacted, leaving many residents feeling frustrated and inconvenienced. During a visit by a reporter on November 7, several residents shared their experiences of how the power disruption affected their daily lives.
Dai Youde, a 75-year-old retiree, recounted his ordeal. While enjoying his massage chair, he heard a popping sound. Although he continued using it, the chair eventually stopped working, along with the kitchen lights. Dai spent over $20 to replace the damaged lights and another $170 to repair his massage chair. He kept the receipts but was uncertain about claiming the damages.
Wang, another resident, faced similar issues. Her TV set-top box and fridge were damaged, leaving her without TV for three weeks. After a long search, she found a repairman and spent $140 to fix the set-top box. Unfortunately, her fridge also needed repairs due to an overheated electrical board, costing her an additional $40 for transportation. Concerned about not being able to claim these expenses, she now owns only one fridge instead of two.
Widespread Damage and Responses
Deng, another affected resident, reported that all three air conditioners in his home were spoiled. His children have since hired a repairman and are exploring options to claim damages from the town council.
In response to the situation, the Jalan Besar Town Council took to Facebook on October 16, informing residents about a half-hour power outage in Potong Pasir. Their team worked tirelessly through the night to resolve the issue and even conducted door-to-door checks to ensure stable electricity supply for everyone. They also shared a commendation from a resident who appreciated their prompt support during this challenging time.
Official Explanation and Future Precautions
The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) provided a detailed explanation regarding the voltage fluctuations. They confirmed that the issue stemmed from a termite infestation at the Potong Pasir Ave 1 substation, which occurred during upgrading works on October 13. To maintain electricity for residents, the power supply was routed through a backup cable that unfortunately failed due to the infestation. SP PowerGrid managed to resolve the situation within 30 minutes and has since repaired the damaged cable. They are collaborating with the Jalan Besar Town Council to assist affected residents.
The MTI also mentioned that the Energy Market Authority is reviewing its workflows for future upgrading works to prevent similar incidents.
