Rising Costs Challenge Sugarcane Juice Stalls at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre
The beloved sugarcane juice stalls at Marsiling Mall Hawker Centre are facing tough times. Once bustling with 18 stalls, only seven remain open today. Rising costs have forced many hawkers to close shop, as shared by Chua Lay Sing, chairman of the Woodlands Town Centre Merchants’ Association, in a recent interview. Both hawkers and customers are feeling the pinch, as prices for sugarcane drinks have increased significantly in recent years.
The Price Hike Explained
A 2018 report highlighted a shortage of sugarcane, which disrupted supply chains for hawkers and suppliers alike. The situation worsened during the Covid-19 pandemic, as many foreign workers returned home, leading to further supply issues. Although planting resumed after restrictions were lifted, the long growth cycle of sugarcane meant that supplies remained tight. One supplier noted that the price for a box of sugarcane had soared to around $37 or $38.
Before the pandemic, a 20kg box of sugarcane was priced between $20 and $30. Now, with inflation and the recent GST increase, suppliers find it challenging to revert to previous prices.
Stallholders Adapt to Rising Costs
Among the remaining stallholders is 60-year-old Chen, who creatively pairs her sugarcane juice with fruits like lemon, coconut, and salted plums. She revealed that the price for a box of sugarcane jumped to $35 at the start of last year, prompting her to raise the price of her juices with salted plums by 50 cents. Currently, a medium cup of sugarcane juice with salted plums costs $3, while those with lime or lemon are priced at $3.50.
“Itβs tough to do business,” Chen admitted, but she tries not to pass on all the costs to her customers. Only three types of sugarcane juice saw a price increase.
Another stall owner, Liu, also sells sugarcane juice alongside coffee and tea. She noted that during Hari Raya Puasa last year, the price for a box of sugarcane jumped from over $20 to about $35. To cope with rising costs, Liu raised her sugarcane juice prices by 50 cents, with regular-sized cups costing $2 and large cups at $3. “The cost of sugarcane surged very quickly, and once costs rise, they won’t fall,” she explained.
