Royston Tan’s Heartwarming CNY Short Film Unveils the True Spirit of Family and Community in a Mouthwatering ‘Cai Fan’ Feast

Discovering the Heart of Community: Extended Love This Chinese New Year

Have you ever thought about what family truly means? In Singapore, family isn’t just about blood ties; it’s also about the bonds we form with those around us. The latest Chinese New Year short film, **Extended Love**, directed by Royston Tan, beautifully captures this sentiment.

This touching three-minute film, made in collaboration with creative agency MullenLowe Singapore and commissioned by the Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI), tells the story of Adeline, a Singaporean living abroad. She returns home to celebrate Chinese New Year with her grandmother, who lives alone. Adeline hopes to convince her grandmother to move overseas with her parents. However, her grandmother has a different perspective on family.

A Heartwarming Reunion Dinner

When Adeline arrives at her grandmother’s cai fan stall in a local coffee shop, she is greeted by a vibrant community of neighbours gathered for a reunion dinner. One of them, “Uncle Ong,” shares that this special dinner has been a tradition for years. Adeline’s grandmother proudly states, “After years of looking out for each other, they are practically family.”

As the nostalgic tune of Mavis Hee’s *Moonlight in the City* fills the air, the film culminates in a scene where everyone sits together, sharing stories and laughter over a hearty meal. Adeline is moved when her grandmother reminds her that “Even the most delicious meal can never compare to the richness of relationships.” In that moment, Adeline understands that her grandmother is surrounded by a loving ‘found’ family.

Celebrating Community and Togetherness

Royston Tan emphasizes the film’s themes of family, community, and the joy of reunions through shared meals. He hopes to inspire Singaporeans to cherish the strength of community bonds and to celebrate festive occasions in new and meaningful ways.

**Extended Love** is available for viewing on all Gov.sg social media platforms and will air on free-to-air television, Channel 8 and Channel U, from February 2 to 25.

Ways to Foster Community Spirit During Festive Occasions

As we reflect on the film’s message, how can we encourage Singaporeans to gather and celebrate in meaningful ways? Here are some suggestions:

  • Community Events: Organize cultural performances, food fairs, and interactive activities that foster interaction and bonding.
  • Collaborative Celebrations: Encourage different communities to join forces for joint celebrations, promoting unity and inclusivity.
  • Public Spaces: Create festive-themed public spaces for communal activities like picnics and games.
  • Education and Awareness: Run campaigns highlighting the importance of community and ‘found’ family through workshops and social media.
  • Volunteer Opportunities: Provide chances for Singaporeans to volunteer during festive times, helping those in need and strengthening community ties.
  • Inclusive Celebrations: Ensure celebrations are accessible for everyone, accommodating diverse needs and promoting a welcoming atmosphere.

By implementing these actions, we can encourage a stronger sense of belonging and community spirit during festive occasions. Let’s come together to celebrate not just our traditions, but also the relationships that enrich our lives.
