Community Clutter in Sembawang: A Call for Kindness
A resident in Sembawang is facing scrutiny for the bulky items cluttering the corridor outside his flat. Living on the 10th floor of Block 417 Canberra Road, this individual has been storing an assortment of items, including potted plants, bicycles, umbrellas, and cardboard boxes, right outside his unit. Reports indicate that there’s even an altar and incense burner in the mix.
Friendly Neighbour or Cluttered Corridor?
While some neighbours describe him as friendly and often greet him, they are understandably concerned about the mess in their shared space. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed frustration, saying, “They’ve never seen him clearing up the mess.” It seems he may have accumulated too many belongings and struggles to part with them. However, many agree it would be best for him to tidy up and stop stacking items in the corridor.
Community Concerns Raised Online
Recently, a netizen named Chris took to Stomp to voice concerns about the clutter. He highlighted that the accumulation of items could pose a fire hazard and obstruct escape routes during emergencies. Chris noted that during his last visit in 2022, the corridor was clear, but now a large table blocks the path, making it difficult for residents to navigate.
Response from the Resident
In response to the growing concerns, the man, who works as a delivery driver, mentioned that he hadn’t received any complaints about the items outside his home for the past 30 years. He expressed a willingness to resolve the situation if his neighbours approached him directly. He clarified that the items are not permanent fixtures and even mentioned that he had installed wheels under some boxes for easier movement. The altar, he explained, is outside due to space limitations within his flat.
Action from Sembawang Town Council
The Sembawang Town Council has acknowledged the issue, stating they previously issued an advisory notice to the resident, which resulted in some reduction of clutter. Following the recent feedback, the council plans to engage with him again, reissue a notice, and keep an eye on the situation. The resident confirmed he received the notice and assured that he would relocate the items from the lift lobby, sell what he could, and remove any cardboard boxes that could pose a fire risk.
A Chance for Community Support
This situation presents an opportunity for the community to come together and assist the man in decluttering his home. It could foster neighbourly bonds, kindness, and a shared commitment to maintaining a safe living environment.
Building Empathy and Organizing Help
To improve the situation, it’s essential to share more about the man’s circumstances and why he needs help. Understanding his background can foster empathy and encourage community support. Organizing a structured plan for the decluttering process could also ensure that assistance is effective. Promoting this initiative through social media or community bulletin boards can help reach a wider audience and encourage participation in this act of kindness.
How can we better communicate the man’s situation to generate empathy and support from the community? Let’s come together to help our neighbour and create a safer, more pleasant living space for everyone.
