Parking Etiquette: A Lesson from Serangoon Gardens
Finding a parking spot in Singapore can be a real headache, but one driver took it to a whole new level by blocking someone else’s driveway. A resident from Serangoon Gardens, Valerie Woo, shared her frustration on the Facebook group Complaint Singapore after discovering a black Mazda parked right outside her home on Sunday (Feb 25) around noon.
Blocked Driveway, Big Problems
Valerie, 44, posted photos of the offending vehicle along with her message, asking, “Who parks their car outside somebody else’s gate like this? Blocking the entire driveway!” She explained that her elderly mother is bedridden, and in case of a medical emergency, that parked car could prevent paramedics from reaching their home quickly.
“It’s really inconsiderate to block someone’s driveway, no matter how long you plan to park there,” Valerie expressed. After an hour, the driver finally left, but Valerie suspected it might be the same person who had parked there a few years ago. The car was so close to the gate that she couldn’t even open it to leave her house.
Frustration Mounts
Valerie described the situation as “very frustrating.” The parked car made it difficult for her family to move in and out of their home, forcing them to navigate around it. She noted that this driver repeated the behaviour about twice a month, parking outside her home.
In a bid to deter him, Valerie and her neighbour placed their dustbins on the driveway, but it didn’t work. “The bins should have been a deterrent, but he still parked in a way that shows his attitude,” she remarked. She even likened the situation to a “middle finger” to the residents.
Despite her annoyance, Valerie chose not to involve the authorities at that moment, hoping to avoid any unpleasantness. Instead, she left a handwritten note on the car, kindly asking the driver to consider her elderly mother’s situation.
Community Response
Valerie’s post quickly garnered attention, with netizens criticising the driver for his lack of parking manners. Many suggested that she should have reported the issue to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) instead of just leaving a note, which some felt was too lenient. In response, Valerie stated that she wanted to handle the matter amicably for now but would contact the authorities if the driver repeated his offence.
Last March, local celebrity Jade Seah found herself in a similar predicament when she received a passive-aggressive note from a homeowner after parking her car along a road in a private housing estate. Jade defended her actions on Instagram, asserting that the land outside her house is public property where anyone can park. She shared her past encounters with homeowners who confronted her for parking in private estates, highlighting their attempts to intimidate others.
Understanding Parking Etiquette
In private estates, vehicles are allowed to park on both sides of the road if there are no markings and the lane divider is a single non-continuous white line. However, drivers are advised to park in a way that does not obstruct entrances or traffic flow.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of parking etiquette and being considerate to others. It’s essential for drivers to be mindful of where they park, ensuring they don’t inconvenience or endanger anyone.
Practical Tips for Considerate Parking
To help improve parking habits, here are some practical tips:
– Always check for signs indicating parking restrictions.
– Avoid parking in front of driveways or entrances.
– Consider the needs of others, especially those with elderly or disabled family members.
– If you notice a potential obstruction, think twice before leaving your vehicle there.
By being more aware of parking etiquette, we can all contribute to a more considerate community.
