The issue came to light on March 22 when former Ria 89.7FM DJ Abdum Karim Sadali, known as DJ KC, raised concerns on Facebook. He noticed that Shiok Burger was listed as a halal option on Foodpanda and decided to order some burgers and fries. However, when his son questioned the halal status of the food upon delivery, DJ KC felt compelled to dig deeper.

A post by HalalSG confirmed that Shiok Burger was not halal as advertised. Despite DJ KC’s attempts to clarify the situation with the restaurant, he remained unsure about its halal status. Shiok Burger operates at Paya Lebar Square and Raffles City, and a spokesperson from Delibowl, the company managing Shiok Burger, stepped in to clarify the situation. Delibowl, which is halal-compliant and certified, received approval from the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) on January 26, 2024, after submitting an amendment application for Shiok Burger’s halal certification.

The spokesperson explained that the certification process followed standard procedures similar to those used by other establishments. However, while Shiok Burger announced its halal certification on February 7 this year, a check revealed that it was not listed in MUIS’ online directory of halal-certified eateries. MUIS differentiates between halal-certified companies, which undergo rigorous audits, and halal-compliant companies that follow halal practices without formal certification.
