Imagine walking into a furniture store, excited to furnish your new HDB flat, only to find out that it has suddenly closed its doors. This is the unfortunate reality for several customers of Bedchamber Boutique in Ubi, who have been left high and dry after the shop abruptly shut down, leaving their orders unfulfilled.

Customers Left in the Lurch

According to reports, at least 16 customers have been affected, with a total of over $35,000 paid to the store. One of the affected customers, 28-year-old Samuel Lee, shared his experience of purchasing a bed frame and king-size mattress for $2,049 last year. Despite making partial payments of $819 and $910, his furniture was not delivered as promised on May 9, 2024, due to a defect. After numerous attempts to reach out to the store, he discovered that the showroom had closed. Frustrated, he has now taken legal action to resolve the issue.

Another customer, surnamed Xu, paid $3,249 for several beds in April, only to face delays and a sudden change in the store’s office address. When she found out that the Malaysian brand she was offered as a substitute was no longer supplying to Bedchamber Boutique, she decided to lodge a police report.

Common Complaints and Concerns

Similar stories have emerged from other customers, including another individual with the surname Xu, who also experienced delays in receiving his bed frames and struggled to get a refund. Complaints about late deliveries, poor-quality furniture, and unresponsive customer service have been rampant. Allegations of rent arrears by the business owner have also surfaced.

Investigations revealed that Bedchamber Boutique’s social media accounts and website have been taken down, and attempts to contact the company have been fruitless. The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) reported receiving 19 complaints against the store from June 1 to 10. They advise consumers to avoid making full payments before receiving their furniture and to ensure that delivery timelines and recourse for delays are clearly outlined in contracts.
