Chen Zhenxing, who was dining with his family around 3.20pm, shared his experience with 8world news. Before entering the restaurant on the second floor, Chen ensured that his parents parked their personal mobility devices (PMDs) neatly at a corner near the customer service counter, making sure they didn’t block any shoppers.

However, just as their food arrived at 3.45pm, a security guard entered the restaurant and questioned whether the PMDs belonged to Chen’s parents. The guard insisted that the devices be moved to the designated parking area on the first floor. Chen explained that his parents, aged 86 and 75, have difficulty walking. “If they could climb from the first floor to the second, they wouldn’t need mobility devices,” Chen argued. Unfortunately, the guard didn’t budge and issued a parking advisory slip instead.

Going Viral

Feeling frustrated, Chen took to TikTok to share the incident. His video showed his elderly parents being escorted out of the restaurant, with the elderly woman struggling to walk and the man using a walking stick. A viewer commented, “They can’t walk, and yet he wants them to climb the stairs.” The video quickly gained traction, racking up nearly 200,000 views and around 800 comments.

While many netizens felt the mall should have shown more leniency, some suggested that the couple should have used a wheelchair. Others even proposed stricter rules for delivery riders parking in the mall.

The parking advisory slip left Chen’s parents anxious about potential fines for not moving their PMDs. As a result, they chose to pack their food and eat at home instead. Chen mentioned, “Even the waiters told my parents to eat slowly, but they didn’t feel comfortable and wanted to leave quickly.”

Living in Ang Mo Kio, Chen expressed that this was the first time they faced such a situation. Previously, his parents had visited shopping malls with their PMDs without any issues. While he understands that the security guard was doing his job, he hopes that mall management can be more empathetic towards the elderly, especially as Singapore’s population ages.
