Assistant Commissioner of Police Aileen Yap, who leads the Anti-Scam Command (ASCom), shared alarming insights in an interview with The Straits Times on March 11.
Rising Reports of Ticket Scams
Many fans have reported purchasing tickets from resellers, only to discover they were fake when they arrived at the National Stadium. Some scammers vanish after pocketing the money, leaving victims devastated. Since Taylor Swift’s arrival, the number of reported concert ticket scams has skyrocketed. From January 1 to March 12, there were 1,551 victims of e-commerce scams related to concert tickets, resulting in losses exceeding $737,000. Out of these, 960 victims fell for scams linked to Taylor Swift’s concerts, losing over $538,000.
AC Yap is concerned about the potential rise in these scams, especially with more concerts lined up in Singapore. If this trend continues, e-commerce scams could become the leading type of fraud in the first half of 2024. In 2023, job scams were the most prevalent, followed closely by e-commerce scams, which accounted for 9,783 cases and losses of at least $13.9 million.
Who is Most Affected?
Interestingly, most victims of these scams are women aged 30 and below. Factors like optimism bias and overconfidence may lead some to underestimate the risks involved in online purchases. AC Yap has suggested that regulating ticket scalping could help combat this issue.
She commended online marketplace Carousell for taking proactive measures by temporarily suspending the sale of Taylor Swift concert tickets on its platform to protect buyers. Scammers are also targeting victims on social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Telegram, and Xiaohongshu.

The Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Edwin Tong, has highlighted that attracting major events is vital for the country’s cultural development.
