A Real-Life Rental Nightmare
Recently, a man named Hong shared his harrowing experience with a rental scam that began with a simple Facebook post. Seeking a room to rent, he and his girlfriend were contacted by a woman named ‘Becca’ who offered a room in Sengkang. During their viewing, Becca claimed she was helping her boyfriend’s parents find tenants as she was getting married soon. She even promised to help Hong buy furniture!
However, things took a turn when Becca requested a deposit of $950. Hong negotiated to pay half upfront and the rest after signing the contract. Alarm bells rang when he noticed Becca was only reachable via WhatsApp. Just before his move-in date, Becca started making excuses, leading Hong to confront her. When she didn’t answer the door, he had no choice but to call the police.
In a twist, Becca’s boyfriend claimed he was also a victim of her deception. Even Becca’s mother met with Hong, insisting she had no idea about her daughter’s actions. Sadly, Hong discovered at least seven other victims online, with one person knowing of ten more who fell for the same scam.
Another Victim’s Story
Xie, another victim, shared a similar tale. After posting on Xiaohongshu about her search for a rental, she received a message from someone named ‘Rebecca.’ Promising a move-in date of July 6, Rebecca kept delaying, eventually leading Xie to pay $1,300 to temporarily stay elsewhere. When Xie finally wanted to move in, Rebecca claimed there were electrical issues and suggested she stay in a hotel for which Xie paid $1,000. To make matters worse, Xie even lent Rebecca $200.
Now, Rebecca’s mother is reportedly negotiating repayment with the other victims.
