Are Roosters Ruining Your Sleep? One Woman’s Quest for Peace
Have you ever been woken up by the crowing of roosters at an unearthly hour? For one frustrated resident in Sin Ming Avenue, this has been a nightly struggle. After years of sleepless nights, she decided enough was enough and invested nearly $7,000 in soundproof windows to finally enjoy some peace and quiet.
Xu, a 58-year-old housewife, has noticed an alarming rise in the number of roosters roaming freely under her HDB block. “I’m really worried they might cause a fire since they love to perch on the electrical wires,” she expressed. With over 20 of these noisy birds causing chaos, her family, who wakes up at 6 AM for work, often finds it hard to catch a good night’s sleep.
Despite her soundproof windows, the noise still creeps in from the living room. Another resident, 67-year-old Liu, shared her frustrations about how her grandson struggles to sleep with the roosters crowing at 2 or 3 AM. This issue has been a long-standing annoyance for many in the area.
In response to residents’ complaints, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore took action and humanely euthanized 24 of the free-roaming chickens. Interestingly, a survey conducted in June 2019 revealed that 90% of residents actually preferred the chickens to stay. However, their presence has been a double-edged sword.
In March 2019, NParks (National Parks Board) found that there were 69 chickens in the estate. The increasing number of roosters has been attributed to residents feeding them. One resident even spotted a woman scattering rice and breadcrumbs under the block, attracting more birds.
To tackle this issue, NParks has set up a task force, which includes representatives from the Bishan-Toa Payoh Town Council and the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society, along with the Sin Ming Court Residents’ Committee. They aim to manage the poultry population effectively.
While the government is taking steps to address the noise problem, residents are still seeking a long-term solution. Identifying the source of the noise is crucial. Once pinpointed, authorities can collaborate with relevant parties to implement quieter measures, such as using less noisy construction equipment.
Additionally, educating the public on reducing noise pollution could play a significant role in restoring peace. After all, everyone deserves a good night’s sleep, don’t you think?
Enhancing Community Well-Being Through Noise Management
In our community, many individuals are experiencing disruptions to their sleep quality due to noise pollution. While the government is actively addressing this issue, there is a collective need for further action to enhance our living environment.
Understanding how government initiatives can alleviate this problem is crucial. Identifying the sources of noise is the first step. Once pinpointed, collaboration with relevant stakeholders can lead to effective solutions, such as promoting the use of quieter construction methods. Additionally, public education on minimizing noise pollution can empower everyone to contribute to a more peaceful community.
By working together to identify and address noise issues, we can foster a healthier, more harmonious living space for all residents. Initiatives could include community workshops on noise reduction techniques and partnerships with local businesses to promote quieter practices.
