Singapore is the only Asian Pacific gateway city with affordable housing. Report

Singapore: The Affordable Gateway to Homeownership in Asia

Did you know that Singapore stands out as the only affordable gateway city in the Asia-Pacific region? A recent study from a non-profit research institute has revealed some fascinating insights about housing across 28 cities, including our very own Lion City, as well as cities in China and Japan.

One of the most impressive stats? Singapore boasts an incredible homeownership rate of nearly 90%! This is largely thanks to the Housing Development Board (HDB) flats, which are priced at a median of S$527,918 (around US$379,283). This makes owning a home in Singapore much more attainable compared to other major cities.

However, the average home price in Singapore is about US$1.13 million, which can be quite a jump for many. Interestingly, around 80% of the housing stock consists of properties that are less than four storeys tall.

When it comes to renting, non-HDB properties in Singapore are the priciest, with an average monthly rent of US$2,046. For comparison, renting in Sydney costs about US$1,895, while in Hong Kong, the median rent is a staggering 50% of the median household income. Speaking of Hong Kong, the median property price there is around US$1.27 million, and rental prices have skyrocketed by 150% since 2003.

What Does This Mean for Singaporeans and Beyond?

This news is quite eye-opening, especially for those in other countries who might be surprised to learn that Singapore offers relatively affordable housing options. So, how does this impact our friends overseas?

The affordability of Singapore's housing market could encourage more people from abroad to consider visiting or even relocating here. This influx could give a nice boost to our economy and create more job opportunities for everyone.

In a nutshell, Singapore continues to be a shining example of accessible homeownership in a region where many cities struggle with high property prices. Whether you're a local or an expat, it's great to see our city-state leading the way in making homeownership a reality for so many!
