A Heroic Rescue at Desaru: A Father’s Brave Act Saves Lives
On a seemingly ordinary trip to Desaru, a Singaporean father turned into an unexpected hero. This heartwarming tale of bravery unfolded on September 9, when 45-year-old Xie, a self-employed dad of two, jumped into action to save five teenagers from drowning. The story, reported by Shin Min Daily News, has captured the hearts of many and serves as a reminder of the courage that can emerge in dire situations.
A Family Outing Takes a Dangerous Turn
Xie and his wife, Li, had planned a fun day at Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast. However, they arrived just before it opened and decided to explore Tanjung Balau Beach instead. Little did they know, their day would take a dramatic turn.
As they strolled along a bridge overlooking the sea, they heard a commotion at around 8:40 AM. Initially thinking it was just some playful banter, Li soon spotted five to six teenagers struggling in the water. Panic set in when one of the swimmers disappeared beneath the waves.
A Father’s Quick Decision
Realising the seriousness of the situation, Xie wasted no time. He stripped off his shirt and plunged into the water to rescue the teens. Li recalled that three young girls clung to a buoy while two others—a boy and a girl—were separated from their group. With determination, Xie swam towards them, pulling them to safety.
Meanwhile, other students on the shore attempted to help using makeshift wooden planks. Together, they managed to bring the teens back to safety, but the ordeal was far from over. One boy required immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), while Xie continued to assist the girls who were holding onto the buoy.
The Aftermath of the Rescue
Emergency rescue workers soon arrived, taking the boy to the hospital. Tragically, later that day, the body of a missing 13-year-old girl was discovered, and two other teenagers were found unconscious. They received respiratory therapy before being transported to a local clinic. Xie himself suffered minor injuries during the rescue.
In the days following the incident, Xie felt a heavy weight of guilt. Despite his heroic actions, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he should have done more. Li tried to comfort him, but she could only express how proud she was of his bravery.
A Cautionary Tale
Conversations with locals revealed that Tanjung Balau Beach has a history of drownings, with many visitors lacking swimming skills. The couple learned that strong undercurrents can make the sea particularly dangerous, highlighting the need for caution.
What Makes a Hero?
Xie’s story is a powerful reminder of what it means to be a hero. His willingness to help others, his quick thinking, and his selflessness in the face of danger are qualities that inspire us all.
In a world where we often feel disconnected, Xie’s actions remind us of the importance of community and looking out for one another. As we reflect on this incident, let’s celebrate those who step up in times of need and encourage a spirit of kindness in our everyday lives.
