Singaporeans are scared by the eerie HDB lift lobby. One mother claims her daughter is afraid to use lifts alone.

Residents Voice Concerns Over Eerie Lift Lobby Design in Tampines

When you get the keys to your new HDB flat, it’s usually a moment of joy. But for some residents in Tampines, excitement quickly turned into discomfort. A TikTok video showcasing the unsettling lift lobby at Block 640B of Tampines GreenVines has sparked a wave of reactions, with many finding the design quite creepy.

What’s Causing the Fuss?

Zelia2702, a resident, shared her experience online. She posted a photo of the lift lobby, highlighting its striking red tiles and walls. This unusual colour scheme has raised eyebrows among residents. One concerned parent expressed worries about her daughter using the lift alone, fearing the dark atmosphere could be intimidating.

Other blocks in the same project feature different colour schemes, including yellow and blue. Yet, it’s the red that has caught the most attention. Zelia’s video has racked up over 100,000 views on TikTok, with many viewers echoing her sentiments about the odd interior design.

Community Reactions

Another resident, Fu, shared his thoughts with Lianhe Zaobao, describing the lobby as “rather dark” and difficult to navigate at night. He likened the daytime appearance to a festive Chinese New Year vibe, while at night, it reminded him of a temple.

Interestingly, a neighbour mentioned a growing sense of community among residents, despite the design concerns. Yan, who lives in a nearby block with the same colour scheme, visited out of curiosity. He and his wife are set to receive their keys by March 31, but couldn’t resist checking out the infamous lobby. Yan described the experience as unsettling, saying it felt like their hair was standing on end when they exited the lift.

Improvements on the Way

Fortunately, changes are in motion to enhance the lift lobbies. Residents have spotted workers repainting the ceilings white, aiming to brighten up the space. This effort has been welcomed by those interviewed, as a lighter environment could ease some of the eerie feelings.

Official Response

In response to the growing concerns, Baey Yam Keng, the Member of Parliament for Tampines GRC, addressed the issue on TikTok. He urged residents to refrain from taking matters into their own hands, as it could be both illegal and unsafe. Baey acknowledged that the colour scheme “doesn’t look right” at night and reassured residents that HDB is investigating the matter.

Why the Red Tiles and Walls?

So, what’s behind the choice of red tiles and walls in the lift lobby? This design is not typical for HDB blocks, leading to speculation. While HDB might be aiming for a unique look, the rationale remains unclear.
