Exciting News for India’s Space Ambitions: Skyroot Aerospace Secures $51 Million Funding!
In a thrilling development for the Indian space sector, Skyroot Aerospace has just announced a whopping $51 million (S$71 million) in funding, led by GIC, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund. This investment is set to propel the company into the commercial satellite launch arena, with plans to kick off operations in the latter half of 2023.
Why is this significant? The Indian government is keen to encourage private players to enhance its already impressive state-run satellite programme. India has built a reputation for affordable space missions, with its 2014 Mars mission costing just $74 million—less than the budget of some Hollywood films! In comparison, India’s total spending on space research stands at $3.3 billion, which is relatively modest next to China’s $19.6 billion.
Despite accounting for only 2% of the global $360 billion space economy, India is on a mission to make space research more accessible to private enterprises. Skyroot is leading the charge with plans to develop India’s first privately-built space launch vehicle. This innovative rocket, constructed entirely from carbon fiber, boasts the capacity to carry payloads of up to 800kg (1,760 lbs) into low-Earth orbit.
The company has also partnered with ISRO, India’s state-run space agency, to share facilities and expertise. Skyroot’s founder, Naga Bharath Dka, a former ISRO engineer, expressed optimism about the funding, stating, “This round will allow us to achieve full-scale commercial satellite launches in less than a year.”
Currently, Skyroot has already booked payload slots for future launches, but they remain flexible and open to adjusting their schedule to meet customer needs. The company aims to conduct its first commercial launch by mid-2023. Following this funding round, Mayank Rawat, GIC India’s managing director, will join Skyroot’s board, further strengthening their mission.
This news is not just a win for the Indian space industry; it’s a beacon of hope for job creation and new opportunities. With government support and potential internal training programs from companies, more individuals will have the chance to upgrade their skills and contribute to this growing sector.
How does this impact the everyday person? More jobs in the space industry mean more opportunities for everyone to thrive and develop their careers. It’s an exciting time for innovation and growth in India’s space journey!
