Young Entrepreneur: Fang Defu’s Journey in the F&B Industry

At just 14 years old, while many of his peers are busy with school activities or hanging out at the nearest hawker centre, Fang Defu is already making a mark in the food and beverage (F&B) industry. According to Shin Min Daily News, Fang helps manage his mother’s drinks stall in Toa Payoh, showcasing a level of responsibility that is truly inspiring.

Balancing School and Work

Fang, a student at Guangyang Secondary School, has been honing his skills in making coffee and tea since Primary 4. After school, he quickly cycles from Bishan to Toa Payoh to lend a hand at the stall, often returning home around 8 PM. Despite the long hours, Fang manages to keep up with his homework, either at the stall or once he gets home. His mother, Ruby Ho, appreciates his help, especially since she sometimes needs a break. “Fang said that she is older and needs a break sometimes,” he shared with Shin Min.

A Dream of Vietnamese Cuisine

Fang has bigger dreams beyond the drinks stall. He aspires to open a Vietnamese restaurant in the future, inspired by his mother’s culinary skills. Ruby, who is of Vietnamese descent, excels at creating desserts that blend local and Vietnamese flavours. Fang envisions a buffet restaurant where diners can savour authentic Vietnamese dishes and a special dessert area called “Dessert Queen” to showcase his mother’s talents.
