Bee-ware: Frustration Grows as Telok Blangah Resident Faces Swarm of Bees

Imagine coming home to find your HDB flat swarming with nearly 2,000 bees! That’s exactly what happened to a resident living on the 14th floor in Telok Blangah. On August 27, he experienced what he described as his worst night ever, with bees buzzing around him like a scene from a horror movie.
“I tried to count them, but I lost track as more kept coming,” he shared. The video and photos he sent in don’t even capture half of the chaos. Although he and a friend managed to fend off some of the bees with an insect sprayer and an electric swatter, the situation remains alarming. “I’m pretty sure they’re just after the honey,” he added.

Health Concerns for the Family

This isn’t just a minor inconvenience. The resident lives with his 81-year-old mother and his sister, who has mental disabilities. He’s worried about their safety. Recently, his mother has come home from work with swollen hands covered in bruises, a painful reminder of the bee attacks. “I’m starting to notice how often these bruises appear,” he said, highlighting the toll this situation is taking on their health and mental well-being.

Seeking Help from the Town Council

The resident has been proactive, making multiple complaints to the Tanjong Pagar Town Council since the bee problem began. However, the last feedback they received about bees in the area was back in January 2012. A spokesperson from the Town Council mentioned that they dispatched pest control on the same night the resident reported the swarm but found no bees around the 14th floor. They also conducted a follow-up inspection on the roof the next day, again finding nothing.
Despite these efforts, the resident feels his concerns are not being taken seriously. “This isn’t just about pesky insects; it’s affecting our lives,” he expressed.

What’s Next?

With media attention now on this issue, there’s hope that it will prompt a more serious response. The resident and his family just want to live peacefully in their home without the fear of bee attacks. How many more complaints will it take for a lasting solution?
If you’ve faced similar issues in your neighbourhood, it might be time to speak up. After all, no one should have to live in fear of a bee swarm!
