Unusual Phenomenon: Ang Mo Kio HDB Flat Flooded by Mysterious Foamy Water on Christmas Day

Ang Mo Kio Couple Faces Flooding Woes: A Call for Better Drainage Solutions

It was a rather unexpected “white Christmas” for an elderly couple living in Ang Mo Kio. Ng, 77, and his wife Li, 74, faced a mini flood in their home when foamy water began gushing out from their balcony drain. This incident occurred on December 25, leaving their sixth-floor flat at Block 710, Ang Mo Kio Ave 8, submerged for about two hours.

What Happened?

On that fateful Monday, the couple noticed the continuous seepage of foamy water from their balcony. Ng suspects that a blockage in the drainpipe, combined with the heavy rain, was the culprit. Concerned, they quickly reached out to the Ang Mo Kio Town Council for assistance. Thankfully, two plumbers were dispatched to clear the blockage, stopping the water flow and allowing the situation to return to normal.

Ng shared that this was the third time since September that they encountered such issues, although the previous incidents weren’t as severe. The couple is now worried about what might happen if they aren’t home during a blockage. While no valuable items were damaged, they had to throw away soaked cardboard boxes and magazines.

Investigation Underway

When a reporter visited their flat around noon, the area was dry, with no signs of water damage. Interestingly, Ng noted that no other units on their floor experienced similar flooding, a fact confirmed by their neighbours. The town council informed Ng that the flooding was due to a blocked pipe in a unit downstairs, and they are currently looking into the matter. For now, Ng and Li can only hope for clear skies.

Improving Drainage: A Community Responsibility

This incident sheds light on the urgent need for better infrastructure and maintenance in residential areas. It’s an opportunity for the town council to tackle the ongoing flooding issues head-on. Here are some actions they could consider:

  • Conduct a thorough assessment: Evaluate the drainage system in affected areas to pinpoint existing problems.
  • Implement regular maintenance: Schedule routine cleaning and clearing of drains to prevent blockages.
  • Upgrade infrastructure: If necessary, enhance the drainage system to accommodate heavier rainfall.
  • Improve urban planning: Collaborate with planners to ensure new developments have adequate drainage systems.
  • Educate residents: Inform the community about proper waste disposal to help prevent drain blockages.
  • Collaborate with agencies: Work with national water authorities and environmental agencies for expert support.
  • Establish an emergency response plan: Prepare a plan to address flooding quickly during heavy rain.

By taking these steps, the town council can work towards a lasting solution to prevent future flooding and enhance the overall infrastructure in our beloved residential areas.
