“Wealth should not be distributed”: A retired boss of a motorcycle shop gives $1m to his employees in stock shares

Generosity in Action: A Heartwarming Tale from Singapore

Loyalty is truly a remarkable thing, and it shines through in the story of Lim Soon Hock, a retired motorcycle shop owner who has shown immense gratitude to his long-time employee.

A Gift of Gratitude

Lim recently retired after nearly 40 years of running his shop at 33 Kelantan Lane. As a token of appreciation for his employee, P. Thirunavukkarasu, who had dedicated 20 years to the company, Lim gifted him a set of wrenches. “I wanted to give something back to him for all his hard work,” Lim shared, highlighting the strong bond they had built over the years.

But that wasn’t all. Lim made headlines when he decided to give half of his business, valued at $1 million, to Thirunavukkarasu. Lim explained, “I believe that my employee is the right successor.” He felt that Thirunavukkarasu shared many of his values and was capable of leading the business into the future.

Family and Business: A Thoughtful Decision

Lim’s decision was not made lightly. He also ensured that his 28-year-old son received the other half of the business. “Two people working together can go the distance,” he noted, emphasizing how his son’s strengths complement those of Thirunavukkarasu.

Despite stepping back from daily management, Lim still plays a vital role as a consultant, especially during busy times. He reminisced about his own journey, having quit school as a teenager to pursue his dream of becoming a businessman.

Giving Back to the Community

Beyond his business, Lim is deeply involved in charitable activities. As a charity ambassador for the Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution, he was recently appointed as the Permanent Honorary President. His commitment to philanthropy is evident, having donated $8,888 to support after-school programs at a local madrasah.

Lim’s actions serve as an inspiration for Singaporeans to embrace generosity.
