Shocking Discovery: Used Cigarette Butt Found in Mala Xiang Guo
Imagine enjoying a delicious bowl of mala xiang guo at your favourite hawker centre, only to find a used cigarette butt at the bottom. That’s exactly what happened to PeiYi Neo at the People’s Park Food Centre, and it’s left many feeling disgusted.
The Disturbing Find
On December 26, around 2:30 PM, Neo ordered her mala dish from a stall she had never tried before. Fast forward to 11:30 PM, and as she finished her meal, she made the grisly discovery. “I was absolutely disgusted,” Neo shared with AsiaOne. She had been enjoying the dish with her husband and their three-year-old daughter, and they were surprised at how quickly they polished it off.
A Lack of Apology
When Neo brought the cigarette butt to the attention of the stall staff, she was met with indifference. The staff claimed it was just one of the dried chillies used in the dish and did not offer any apologies. Feeling frustrated but not wanting to escalate the situation in front of her young child, Neo snapped a few photos of the offending item and the stall before leaving.
Reporting the Incident
Neo took the matter seriously and reported the incident to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). They have assured her that an investigator will be assigned to look into the case. This isn’t the first time such a shocking find has occurred; another diner found a cigarette butt in his roasted duck rice earlier this year.
What Would You Do?
Can you imagine how you would feel if you discovered a cigarette butt in your food? Most people would be outraged and upset. Food safety is paramount, and incidents like these raise serious concerns about hygiene standards at food stalls.
