A Journey Home: Li Ruizhang’s Inspiring Return for National Service
Li Ruizhang’s story is one of dedication and resilience. Having spent most of his life overseas, he made the heartfelt decision to return to Singapore at the age of 19 to fulfill his National Service (NS) obligations. Moving to Canada at just three years old and later living in New Zealand for seven years, Li’s journey back home is a testament to his commitment to serve his nation.
A Family’s Support
Reflecting on his last visit to Singapore, Li shared that it was for his sister’s wedding. His mother played a significant role in preparing him for this transition. She even bought an apartment in 2015, anticipating his return after enlistment. During his NS, she flew back to Singapore to support him for six months, cooking his favorite meals and listening to his concerns. His father also made the effort to visit whenever he could, balancing work in New Zealand with family commitments back home.
Graduation Day: A Proud Moment
On a significant Saturday, 211 cadets, including Li, were commissioned as officers in the Singapore Armed Forces at the SAFTI Military Institute. Among them were 124 from the Singapore Army, 23 from the Republic of Singapore Navy, and 64 from the Republic of Singapore Air Force. Li was honored with the rank of second lieutenant and received the prestigious Sword of Merit, awarded to the top 10% of cadets. His achievements brought surprise and pride to his family.
Embracing Challenges and Growth
Li views his fellow cadets as a source of motivation, setting a high standard for himself during NS and in his future career. He learned not only the skills of a soldier but also essential soft skills, such as accepting criticism and building mental resilience. After completing NS, he plans to return to New Zealand to study at the University of Otago’s School of Medicine, but he remains open to job opportunities in Singapore.
Words of Wisdom
At the graduation parade, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu highlighted the importance of a “strong and capable SAF” for the peace of mind of all Singaporeans. She reminded the new officers that their responsibilities will challenge their leadership abilities and require them to inspire others. They must care for their men to ensure mission success.
