For over 60 years, Maris Stella High School has proudly served as a boys’ school. However, this tradition is set to change in 2027, as the primary school section will welcome girls for the very first time. This significant announcement was made by the Ministry of Education (MOE) on May 6, marking a new chapter for the school.

A Co-educational Future

The transition to a co-educational model will not only apply to the primary school but also to the secondary school at Maris Stella’s Mount Vernon campus. Both sections will undergo redevelopment from 2027 to 2029, ensuring a modern learning environment for all students.

Ong Chin Kai, a father of two and an alumnus of Maris Stella, expressed his support for the decision. “It is only right for the community, with new estates being built around the school, to be inclusive,” he shared. He believes that allowing girls into the school provides everyone with the opportunity to attend a nearby institution.

Welcoming Change

Jared Lim, a father of six boys and one girl, sees this change as a relief. “I won’t have to worry about where to send my daughter; she can join her brothers at Maris Stella High in 2030,” he mentioned to The Straits Times.

Sherlyn Aw, whose two sons currently attend the school, believes that having girls in the classroom will help boys learn valuable communication skills. “In the working world, individuals need to be able to interact with both,” she pointed out.

A Rich History

Founded in 1958, Maris Stella High School relocated to its current Mount Vernon site in 1966. This shift to a co-ed environment aligns with a broader trend in Singapore’s education system. For instance, Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) will also accept girls beginning in 2030, following its move to Tengah from Barker Road.

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing has highlighted that all new schools opened by the MOE are co-educational. This approach aims to prevent imbalances in school places for boys and girls in the community, as reported by Today.
