Shocking Encounter: Woman Attacked After Warning PMA Rider
A woman’s routine dog walk turned into a nightmare when she was allegedly attacked by a personal mobility aid (PMA) rider and his friends after she asked him to slow down. Known only by her surname, Oh, the 46-year-old accountant shared her traumatic experience, which left her with a bruised lip and bleeding wounds.
The Incident Unfolds
The unsettling event took place last Saturday around 4 PM outside a condominium in Sembawang. As Oh was about to step out with her dog, she noticed a PMA rider speeding past her. Concerned for her safety, she called out for him to slow down. To her shock, several other PMA riders soon followed, surrounding her.
One rider confronted her, taking off his slipper and approaching her aggressively. Another rider stood in front of her, insisting that she should be more aware of them rather than the other way around. In a sudden escalation, the first rider struck Oh’s face with his slipper while the second pushed her, causing her phone and spectacles to fall.
Feeling Threatened
Oh recounted how she was pushed to the ground. Despite her attempts to get back up and retrieve her belongings, a third rider allegedly shoved her down again, leaving her surrounded by five individuals. “Though my injuries weren’t severe, the sight of five big men towering over me was terrifying,” she said.
After the PMA riders left, construction workers nearby came to check on her and helped collect her damaged spectacles. Oh later called the police, who arrived to take her statement and provide assistance. Paramedics treated her cuts and scrapes, but she continues to feel aches and worries about her safety, especially since the riders reportedly live nearby.
Police Investigation Underway
The police confirmed they received a call for help at 3 Sembawang Crescent around 4:10 PM. While Oh suffered minor injuries, she declined to go to the hospital. Four individuals, aged between 36 and 41, are currently assisting with investigations for voluntarily causing hurt and intentional harassment. The police are continuing their inquiries.
Addressing Road Safety Concerns
This incident raises serious questions about road safety and the behavior of PMA users. In March, during a parliamentary session, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Baey Yam Keng announced plans to lower the speed limit for PMAs from 10 km/h to 6 km/h. This decision was made following recommendations from the Active Mobility Advisory Panel (AMAP) due to rising concerns about reckless riding and oversized PMAs.
Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat emphasized the need to prioritize safety over convenience, stating, “There are trade-offs involved, and I expect pushback from some PMA users. But safety must come first.”
Creating a Safer Road Environment
This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respect and safety on our roads. To foster a safer environment for all users, several initiatives can be considered:
1. **Increased Enforcement**: Stricter enforcement of road safety regulations through more patrols and surveillance can deter reckless behavior.
2. **Educational Campaigns**: Launch campaigns targeting all road users, highlighting the consequences of unsafe actions and promoting mutual respect.
3. **Community Engagement**: Organize events and workshops to educate the public about road safety and encourage community involvement.
4. **School Programs**: Introduce road safety education in schools to teach children safe practices from a young age.
5. **Partnerships with Stakeholders**: Collaborate with local businesses and organizations to support road safety initiatives for a comprehensive approach.
By implementing these measures, we can work towards a more respectful and safer road environment for everyone.

Promoting Safety and Respect on Our Roads for Everyone
This situation underscores the vital need for safety and respect among all road users. It presents a chance for everyone to embrace patience, understanding, and responsible behavior, fostering a safe and harmonious environment for all. Enhancing the enforcement of road safety regulations is crucial. What specific initiatives can we adopt to ensure adherence to safety guidelines? Moreover, how can we effectively raise awareness about the significance of safety and respect on our roads? To enhance compliance and awareness, several initiatives can be considered: 1. **Stricter Enforcement:** Increase the enforcement of road safety regulations through more patrols, surveillance, and penalties for violations to deter unsafe behavior. 2. **Awareness Campaigns:** Launch campaigns aimed at all road users, emphasizing the consequences of unsafe actions and promoting mutual respect. 3. **Community Involvement:** Host community events and workshops to engage the public in discussions about road safety, fostering a sense of responsibility. 4. **Educational Programs in Schools:** Introduce road safety education in schools to teach safe practices from an early age through interactive sessions and demonstrations. 5. **Collaborative Partnerships:** Work with local businesses, non-profits, and government agencies to support comprehensive road safety initiatives. By implementing these strategies, we can cultivate a safer and more respectful road environment for everyone.
This situation provides a unique chance for all road users to come together and create a culture of safety and respect, ultimately benefiting the entire community.
