Jurong East Cafe Sparks Outrage Over Surprise 10-Cent Charge for Drink Lid
A recent incident at a cafe in Jurong East has left one customer feeling frustrated after discovering an unexpected 10-cent charge for a takeaway lid. Koh Shu Zhen took to the Complaint Singapore Facebook page to voice her concerns, highlighting that even bigger chains like Ya Kun Kaya Toast don’t impose such fees.
What Happened at Coffeeman Cafe
On November 6, around 3:20 PM, Koh and her friend visited Coffeeman cafe located at the Devan Nair Institute. They ordered two cups of tea, but the experience took a turn when the cashier asked if they wanted to “cover” their drinks. Koh noted that this phrasing was misleading, as it didn’t clearly indicate that there would be an additional charge for the lid.
“It’s not just about the 10 cents,” Koh, 34, explained. “It’s about being upfront with customers.” She pointed out that all drinks were served in takeaway cups, making the charge feel even more unnecessary.
Realisation of the Hidden Cost
The frustration grew when Koh and her friend checked their receipt after finishing their drinks. They discovered the extra 10-cent fee for the lid, which they hadn’t anticipated. Although the barista later clarified that both beverages were capped, Koh felt that they should have been informed about the charge beforehand.
“We didn’t approach the staff because we had already consumed our drinks,” she added. “If we had known about the charge, we would have declined.”
Calls for Transparency in Pricing
This incident raises important questions about transparency in pricing at cafes and eateries. Hidden costs can easily catch customers off guard, leading to dissatisfaction. Koh’s experience serves as a reminder for businesses to communicate clearly with their patrons about any additional charges.

Understanding Hidden Costs
So, what are these hidden costs that consumers often encounter? They can include:
– **Rent:** The cost of leasing the cafe space.
– **Utilities:** Bills for electricity, water, and other services.
– **Labor:** Wages paid to staff members.
While these costs are part of running a business, transparency is key to maintaining customer trust.
