Surprise Charge for a Takeaway Lid Leaves Customer Fuming

In a recent incident at a cafe in Jurong East, a woman was shocked to find herself charged an extra 10 cents for a “takeaway lid” when she simply wanted to cover her hot drink. Koh Shu Zhen took to the Complaint Singapore Facebook page to voice her frustration, highlighting that the cashier failed to inform her about this additional cost.

What Happened at the Cafe?

Koh and her friend visited Coffeeman cafe at the Devan Nair Institute around 3.20pm on November 6, ordering two cups of teh. The cashier asked if they wanted to “cover” their drinks, without clarifying that this would incur an extra charge. Koh pointed out that even well-known cafes like Ya Kun Kaya Toast do not impose such fees for a lid.

Koh, who is 34, expressed her feelings of being misled. She stated that it wasn’t merely about the 10 cents, but rather the lack of transparency regarding the charges. She noted that all drinks were served in takeaway cups, making the situation even more confusing.

Realisation and Reaction

After enjoying her drink, Koh’s friend checked the receipt and discovered the unexpected charge. Although they had already consumed their drinks, Koh felt cheated and upset that the cashier had not mentioned any fees upfront. She clarified that while they didn’t mind the lid, they would have declined it if they had known it would cost extra.

How to Avoid Being Misled by Businesses

This incident raises an important question: how can we protect ourselves from unexpected charges? Here are some tips:

– **Read Reviews**: Before visiting a cafe or restaurant, check online reviews to see what other customers have experienced.
– **Ask for Recommendations**: Talk to friends and family for their favourite spots and any tips on what to expect.
– **Clarify Charges**: Don’t hesitate to ask the staff about any potential charges before placing your order. It’s always better to be informed.

In a bustling city like Singapore, where we often grab food on the go, being aware of hidden charges can save us from unpleasant surprises. Always stay vigilant and informed!
