Imagine arriving in Singapore with dreams of a better life, only to find yourself homeless and jobless. This is the reality for Jaynal MD, a 25-year-old man from Bangladesh who faced a devastating turn of events after paying $7,000 to an agent for a promised job.
From Dreams to Despair
Jaynal was once an auto-rickshaw driver in Bangladesh, but he was excited about a new opportunity at a dairy farm in Singapore, which promised a monthly salary of S$1,000. Eager for a brighter future, he sold his auto-rickshaw, took out loans, and handed over a hefty sum to secure the job. However, upon arriving in Singapore, he found himself living in a rented house near City Square Mall with other migrant workers.
After two months of waiting with no job updates, Jaynal’s agent abruptly left for Bangladesh, leaving him stranded without a job or a roof over his head. With nowhere to go, he ended up sleeping in a park near City Square Mall.
Support from the Community
Fortunately, Jaynal’s story took a positive turn when he received help from Migrant Workers Singapore (MWS) and Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2). They provided him with temporary housing and support during this challenging time. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) is also stepping in to investigate his case and assist with his well-being.
