For the soul, chicken rice Jalan Besar Hawker offers generous portions for cleaners

Hawker Kindness: A Heartwarming Tale of Generosity in Tough Times

In the bustling world of hawker centres, many vendors are feeling the pinch. Prices are creeping up, and portion sizes are shrinking, leaving diners longing for affordable meals. But amidst this struggle, one touching story stands out.

Meet Henry Tan, a cleaner from Jalan Besar. On September 6th, he shared a delightful experience on Facebook that warmed the hearts of many. While waiting for his dinner at Jia Chicken Rice Berseh Food Centre, he noticed an elderly gentleman’s meal. It was a generous serving of rice, roasted and steamed chicken, along with pork belly and whole eggs. Tan couldn’t help but admire the man’s hearty appetite.

Curious, Tan asked, “Uncle, do you ever eat that much?” The elderly man chuckled and replied, “I wish I had an appetite like his.” To Tan’s surprise, the gentleman paid only $6.67 for that feast! He found out that the meal included a generous amount of meat, and the hawker had a special arrangement for him.

The hawker, who was clearly a kind soul, explained that he offered this “meal deal” off the menu to support regular customers like the elderly cleaner. “This uncle is a cleaner,” he said, highlighting the importance of helping those in need. Many netizens praised the chicken rice vendor for his generosity, with comments like, “I’ll support them just because they are nice to uncle.” However, some felt that $6.67 was still a bit steep, while others thought the portion sizes were just right.

AsiaOne reached out to Tan for more insights. A hawker restaurant owner, Guo Fu Cai from Goldhill Family Restaurant, shared his approach to pricing. He keeps his meals at $2 for one type of meat and one vegetable to assist regulars facing tough times. “When times are tough, we’re doing this for their benefit,” he explained, acknowledging the challenges of covering overheads.

This heartwarming story shines a light on the kindness that still exists in our community. Even in tough times, Singaporeans are ready to lend a helping hand. So, how can we spread more kindness? Start by looking out for those in need around us. Volunteer your time, support local hawkers, and share a smile. Together, we can make a difference!
