Celebrate National Day with Your Neighbours: A Heartwarming Community Gathering
This National Day, Tampines resident Shahid is gearing up for a lively family gathering, but with a twist! On August 10, he will welcome around 20 guests into his home as part of the National Day heartland celebrations. Shahid, a 38-year-old father of three, is one of 59 hosts in the North East District, where residents will enjoy a livestream of the festivities happening at the open field next to Waterway Point in Punggol.
A Family Affair with a Community Spirit
Shahid lives in a cozy four-room flat with his wife and children. “We’re probably going to have a potluck and maybe organize some games for the kids,” he shared. This is their first time opening their home to neighbours and friends, and they see it as a wonderful chance to strengthen community bonds.
Bringing Back the Kampung Spirit
The aim of these watch parties is to revive the kampung spirit, reminiscent of the days when families gathered at community clubs (CCs) to enjoy the National Day Parade (NDP) together. According to a spokesperson from the People’s Association (PA), which is collaborating with the NDP executive committee for these celebrations, this event is all about fostering unity and togetherness.
Exciting Activities Await
The Punggol event, themed ‘One Home’, will feature art exhibits and performances by members of the special needs community. It’s one of five heartland celebrations happening island-wide on August 10, from 4 PM to 9 PM. Other events will take place in Yishun, Bishan, Paya Lebar, and Buona Vista, each with its unique theme.
With an expected turnout of about 160,000 people, around 2,600 PA volunteers will be on hand to ensure everything runs smoothly. Attendees can look forward to static displays from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Civil Defence Force, and the Singapore Police Force. Each site will showcase eight to nine military vehicles, and there will even be a SAF camouflage booth for the public to try on camo cream. And don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display!
Tickets and Accessibility
“Every year, many Singaporeans want to celebrate National Day,” said Colonel Edwin Chua, co-chairman of the heartland celebrations. However, he noted that not everyone can fit into Marina Bay on August 9. That’s why these heartland celebrations are designed to bring the festivities closer to home, making it easier for everyone to join in.
Tickets for the National Day Heartland Celebrations can be collected at CCs, starting Friday. A total of 100,000 tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with each person allowed to collect up to two tickets. Each ticket includes a complimentary NDP pack. Best of all, individuals without tickets can still join the fun, space permitting.
Fostering Inclusivity in Celebrations
This is a fantastic opportunity for Singaporeans to come together and celebrate National Day as a community. It strengthens the sense of unity and belonging, promoting the beloved kampung spirit.
To enhance inclusivity, it’s important to consider how to make National Day celebrations welcoming for everyone, including those who may feel marginalized. Engaging diverse groups in the planning process can ensure that the festivities reflect the entire community.
What initiatives do you think could help make National Day celebrations even more inclusive and representative of Singapore’s rich diversity?
