Surprise Encounter: PM Lawrence Wong Joins Families at West Coast Event
On a sunny Saturday morning, St Joseph’s Institution student Joewin got a delightful surprise when he spotted Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at a community event in West Coast. The 14-year-old was there with his parents and younger brother, and he couldn’t hide his excitement. “It was really nice because we got to talk to PM Wong,” he shared. The family, who has called Boon Lay home for 19 years, enjoyed the various activities at the event, even though Joewin missed out on a photo opportunity with the Prime Minister. However, many other residents eagerly lined up to capture their moments with him.
Connecting with the Community
Last month, PM Wong announced his plans to visit different constituencies to meet as many Singaporeans as possible. This commitment was reiterated during the PA Family Playground event in West Coast, organized by the People’s Association and local grassroots organisations. Launched recently, this family-centric programme encourages families to play, learn, and appreciate one another.
The excitement at West Coast Community Centre was palpable, with around 300 families arriving in the morning. By 4 PM, this number swelled to about 1,000, according to the People’s Association. Among the attendees was Tan Wei Hong, a 39-year-old regional director, who brought his family to enjoy the fun-filled activities, including a soap-making workshop and a bouncy castle.
Quality Family Time
Tan was joined by his wife, their two young sons aged three and five, and his mother. The family spent about two hours exploring various stations and participating in activities. “The kids are so excited, running all over!” Tan exclaimed, adding that his wife was also feeling the heat from all the fun. He noted that the PA Family Playground was a fantastic opportunity for them to bond as a family.
Joewin’s father, Caxton Raja, echoed this sentiment. “With both of us working and the kids in school, it’s tough to find time together,” he explained. “We make the most of our weekends by attending events like this or going cycling.”
Building Stronger Connections
The event was well-attended not only by families but also by West Coast GRC MPs, including Desmond Lee, Foo Mee Har, Rachel Ong, and Ang Wei Neng, along with Pioneer SMC MP Patrick Tay. Addressing the crowd, PM Wong expressed his joy in witnessing the strong connections among families and residents. “From great-grandmothers to the fourth generation, everyone lives close by and keeps in touch. These connections contribute to a sense of home and belonging,” he remarked.
Fostering Inclusivity
Events like these provide valuable opportunities for families to bond and create lasting memories. They also allow Singaporeans to engage with political leaders, fostering a sense of community. However, there’s always room for improvement. Ensuring that events are inclusive and accessible to everyone is crucial.
This could involve:
– Providing accommodations for individuals with disabilities.
– Offering translation services for non-English speakers.
– Creating activities that cater to a diverse range of interests.
To enhance inclusivity, conducting an accessibility assessment of the venue is essential. This helps identify potential barriers for individuals with disabilities. Additionally, providing sign language interpreters or captioning services can make a significant difference for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
Gathering feedback from community members representing diverse backgrounds can also ensure that activities cater to a wide range of preferences. By actively addressing these considerations, events can truly become welcoming spaces for all participants.

Building Community Connections Through Inclusive Events
This event offers a wonderful chance for families to come together and create cherished memories. It also provides an opportunity for Singaporeans to engage with leaders like Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, enhancing our sense of community and belonging. To maximize this experience, we should focus on making the event inclusive and accessible for everyone. This includes ensuring accommodations for individuals with disabilities, offering translation services for non-English speakers, and designing activities that appeal to a variety of interests and backgrounds. By prioritizing inclusivity, we can strengthen the bonds within our community and celebrate our shared values.
By fostering an inclusive environment, we can ensure that every member of the community feels welcomed and valued. This can lead to meaningful interactions and a deeper sense of unity among all participants.
