Mr. Lin, a 76-year-old retiree, expressed his concerns to Shin Min Daily News regarding the flammable items cluttering his neighbour’s unit. These items include gas tanks, trolleys, cardboard boxes, and cabinets, all of which have been accumulating outside the flat at Block 311 Jurong East Street 32 for years.

Concerns Over Gas Tanks

Mr. Lin is particularly worried about the gas tanks left outside, unsure if they still contain gas. “Even an empty gas tank can be dangerous,” he noted. To ease his fears, he sought reassurance about the risks involved with these tanks. As a precaution, he has placed two small fire extinguishers on the shoe rack outside his unit. “They do this to help us, and to protect themselves,” he explained.

Blocked Escape Routes

Other residents have also voiced their concerns. Mr. Chen mentioned that the clutter is blocking the staircase, which poses a serious risk in case of an emergency. “A couple and their son live in that unit, and they’ve been hoarding for decades,” he said. The ages of the couple remain unknown, but their hoarding habits have raised alarms among their neighbours.

Ms. Zheng, who moved into the block in the 1980s, shared her observations. “She likes to pick up miscellaneous items from outside. She’s been doing this since she was young,” she said, referring to the hoarding neighbour. The woman’s husband, who wished to remain anonymous, acknowledged the safety hazard posed by the clutter. “I know it’s blocking the corridor, but there’s nothing I can do about it,” he admitted. Despite attempts to persuade her to declutter, he described it as a vicious cycle.
