A Neighbourhood Unites to Rescue a Stranded Kitten
It truly takes a village to save a life, and in this case, a community came together to rescue a kitten in distress. Last Saturday afternoon, a little feline found itself stranded on the window ledge of a sixth-storey flat at Block 654A Punggol Drive. Thanks to the quick actions of concerned residents, the kitten was saved.
The Call for Help
The drama unfolded when a resident noticed the kitten’s desperate meows echoing from outside. A message was quickly sent out in the residents’ WhatsApp group, sparking a wave of concern. After some investigation, the frightened kitten was spotted trapped outside the window of a sixth-floor unit.
Residents wasted no time in reaching out to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). However, the homeowner was overseas and unreachable, leaving the residents in a bind. As shared by resident Lin, the urgency to act was palpable.
A Creative Rescue Plan
Not willing to let the kitten suffer, a group of residents sprang into action. One resourceful neighbour from a higher floor devised a plan using a rope and a plastic basket to lure the kitten to safety. Unfortunately, their first attempt didn’t go as planned.
Then, in a moment of bravery, another resident climbed out of a fifth-floor window. A video shared in the group chat captured the intense moment as he swiftly retrieved the kitten, much to everyone’s relief. They had sought permission from the homeowner of the fifth-floor unit to access her home for the rescue.
Reunion and Gratitude
After the rescue, the man took the kitten home to clean and feed it. Little did they know, the kitten belonged to Salina, a seventh-floor resident who was unaware of the dramatic rescue. Salina, 51, later shared that one of her kittens had gone missing from a locked cage in her service yard. She suspected the little one had squeezed through a small gap in the window.
Returning home from work, Salina was overjoyed to hear that her neighbours had saved her furry friend. She expressed her gratitude and hopes to be reunited with the kitten, but is also open to letting the rescuer keep it. Salina plans to put all her kittens up for adoption once they are weaned.
Lessons Learned
The SPCA was notified of the incident around 10:45 am on Saturday. Due to a lack of proper equipment, they advised residents to seek help from other agencies. Thankfully, before they could intervene, a neighbour had already rescued the kitten.
This heartwarming story highlights the importance of community spirit. However, it also serves as a reminder for pet owners to take responsibility. Installing secure grills or wire mesh on windows and doors can prevent accidents like this from happening.
