Guo Guanbao, the executive director of Badaling Holdings, has revealed that their coffee shops will charge an extra 20 cents for hot and cold drinks and 30 cents for canned beverages from Friday to Sunday. If you’re planning to enjoy a drink with alcohol, be prepared to pay 50 cents more.

Similarly, Johnson Lim, CEO of Wu Fu Group, mentioned that their coffee shops will also implement a 20-cent surcharge on drinks after 3 PM on Chinese New Year Eve, with a 50-cent increase for alcoholic beverages. Out of Wu Fu’s 16 coffee shops, 11 will remain open on Chinese New Year Eve, but they will close on Saturday and Sunday, returning to normal prices on Monday.

Price Changes at Other Coffee Shops

Andy Hoon, CEO of the Kim San Leng coffee shop chain, shared that they will also introduce a surcharge ranging from 10 to 20 cents on drinks during this festive period. Food prices may rise by 50 cents to $2, depending on the individual stall owners and market conditions.

These surcharges are not just about boosting profits. Guo, Lim, and Hoon explained that they are necessary to cover the rising costs of ingredients and to manage the shortage of manpower during the festive season. Lim noted that many of Wu Fu Group’s staff are locals who will take time off to celebrate with their families. To incentivise staff to work during this busy period, they are offering triple pay for those on duty during Chinese New Year.

In light of the manpower shortage, Badaling Holdings will implement self-service at their coffee shops during the festive period. Qi Ji, a well-known local eatery, will also add a 10 percent surcharge on its menu items from February 9 to 12. While some customers expressed frustration over the price increases on social media, others defended the decision, acknowledging that some workers must be present while others enjoy their holidays.
