A Surprising Meal Price at Kawan Kawan: What Happened?
Have you ever thought a set meal would save you money, only to find out it costs more? This was the case for a diner at Kawan Kawan in Tampines Mall, and it’s a situation many Singaporeans can relate to.
The Diner’s Dilemma
Huang, a customer at the food court, wanted to enjoy a simple serving of toast with Nutella. The price for this ala-carte item was $3.50. However, when he spoke to the cashier, he was offered a set meal that included a drink for $5.70.
He chose a coffee, thinking he was getting a good deal. But after receiving his meal, Huang did some quick calculations. The ala-carte coffee cost $2.10, and the toast was $3.50. To his surprise, he realized he would have saved 10 cents if he had ordered them separately!
When Huang raised this issue with the staff, they informed him that the pricing was set by the company.
A Mistake Uncovered
Following inquiries from the media, Fei Siong Group, which operates Kawan Kawan, revealed that Huang’s set meal was incorrectly served. The set was supposed to include two half-boiled eggs priced at $2. This means Huang actually missed out on a better deal!
A spokesperson from Fei Siong Group mentioned that either the staff forgot to include the eggs or there was an error in preparing the order. To make up for the mistake, they offered Huang a new set meal.
When a reporter visited the outlet, they noticed that the menu did not clearly state that the eggs were part of the set meal. In response, Fei Siong Group promised to update their menus to clarify what’s included in the set meal.
Huang’s Reaction
After learning about the missing eggs, Huang remarked that if the set meal was indeed $5.70, it would have been a fantastic bargain. After all, he would have gotten the toast, drink, and eggs for the price of just the toast and drink!
A Similar Incident
This isn’t the first time a diner faced issues with pricing. In April, Francis Lim shared on Facebook that he was overcharged for his ‘cai fan’ at a Koufu outlet in Velocity @ Novena Square. He paid $15 for a meal he calculated should cost $12.50. When he confronted the stall owner, he was scolded for asking for a receipt.
Koufu later acknowledged the miscalculation and arranged a refund for Lim, along with a complimentary meal as an apology.
The Bigger Picture
These incidents highlight the need for food court operators to reassess their pricing strategies. Here are some suggestions for improvement:
How Food Courts Can Improve Pricing Transparency
1. **Clear Menu Display**: Ensure that menu boards clearly show prices and any additional charges. This allows customers to make informed choices without surprises.
2. **Set Meal Inclusions**: Clearly indicate what each set meal includes, such as main dishes, sides, and drinks. This helps avoid confusion.
3. **Accurate Pricing**: Regularly review and update food prices to reflect current market conditions. This builds trust with customers.
4. **Promote Transparency**: Be upfront about any extra charges, like service fees or GST. Clearly communicate these to customers.
5. **Customer Feedback**: Encourage feedback on pricing and transparency through suggestion boxes or online surveys. Use this feedback for improvements.
6. **Regular Audits**: Conduct audits of pricing practices to ensure compliance and identify any discrepancies. This helps maintain ethical pricing.
By implementing these measures, food court operators can enhance customer satisfaction and loyalty while preventing overcharging incidents.

Enhancing Pricing Transparency for Food Court Operators
Food court operators have a valuable opportunity to enhance customer experiences by reviewing their pricing strategies and ensuring clarity. By clearly displaying menu prices and set meal inclusions, operators can foster informed decision-making among customers, reducing the chances of misunderstandings at the payment counter. Regularly updating prices to reflect market conditions and being transparent about additional charges can build trust and satisfaction. Encouraging customer feedback through various channels allows operators to identify areas for improvement, while conducting regular audits ensures compliance and ethical practices. These steps can lead to a more positive dining experience for everyone involved.
By prioritizing transparency and customer feedback, food court operators can strengthen relationships with patrons, ultimately fostering loyalty and satisfaction in the community.
