Unforeseen Tragedy Strikes: Singaporean’s Dream Vacation Turns Into a Heartbreaking Coma

Tragic Incident Leaves Singaporean Family in Need of Support

In a heart-wrenching incident, a Singaporean family is grappling with the sudden illness of their beloved son while he was on holiday in Taiwan. Benjamin Lum shared the shocking story of his brother, Jake Evan Loo, who fell into a coma during a trip with friends in late November last year.

A Sudden Turn of Events

On the very first night of their getaway, Jake’s friends found him unconscious and alarmingly “covered in what appeared to be blood.” They rushed him to Kaohsiung Municipal Ta Tung Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a hypoglycemic coma—a serious condition caused by dangerously low blood sugar levels.

For three grueling weeks, Jake fought for his life in the hospital, facing severe complications including acute respiratory failure and kidney injury. Benjamin, deeply distressed, described the sight of his brother connected to multiple tubes and reliant on machines to breathe.

Financial Strain and Fundraising Efforts

To cover the staggering medical expenses of NTD $656,550 (approximately S$28,116), Benjamin launched an online fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $72,783 for Jake’s hospital bills and air ambulance fees. The family had to arrange for an air ambulance costing $38,050 to bring Jake back to Singapore, as they could no longer afford his treatment in Taiwan. This led them to borrow money from relatives.

Jake was transported back to Singapore on December 23, 2023, but the financial burden weighed heavily on the family. Benjamin and his siblings had already faced financial challenges after repurchasing their family home following their parents’ divorce.

Family Struggles Amidst Hope

With their father recently unemployed and their mother, aged 61, battling chronic back pain while working in retail, the family is struggling to make ends meet. Benjamin and his sister have taken on part-time jobs as delivery riders to help alleviate the financial strain.

As of December 2023, they have already spent around $66,166 on Jake’s hospital bills. Currently, Jake remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Singapore General Hospital, still in a coma. Benjamin expressed their anxiety, stating, “While there have been some positive signs in his blood test reports, his MRI brain scan shows concerning changes.”
