Tampines Resident Sparks Controversy Over ‘War-Like’ Plane Designs on Block: MP Baey Yam Keng Reacts

Controversy Over Tampines Neighbourhood Centre Design: A Community Conversation

A resident in Tampines has sparked a lively debate over the design at the Tampines N4 Neighbourhood Centre, likening it to a “warplane.” This complaint was raised with the Tampines Town Council, as the resident felt the design was in poor taste. Despite the council’s attempts to clarify the artistic vision, the resident remains adamant about wanting changes or even removal of the design.

Community Support for Nostalgic Designs

In response to the concerns, Baey Yam Keng, the Member of Parliament for Tampines, backed the town council’s decision to keep the original design. He explained that this artwork is part of a series of nostalgic themes that celebrate the history of Tampines North. Interestingly, most residents have shown support for the board game-inspired designs, with Baey stressing the importance of respecting the community’s choice. He also highlighted the need to avoid wasting taxpayers’ money on unnecessary changes.

Addressing Local Concerns

Another issue raised involved the reflection of red light from a neighbouring block, which was painted in red. After receiving similar feedback from other residents, the town council decided to repaint the walls to resolve this concern. Baey assured residents that the council is committed to addressing their feedback within their capabilities, showing a willingness to listen and adapt.

Mural Debate on South Bridge Road

In a separate incident, a mural on South Bridge Road depicting a samsui woman holding a cigarette faced criticism for being offensive and not aligning with Singapore’s anti-smoking policy. However, after reviewing public feedback, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) decided to reassess their stance. The artist clarified that the mural was not intended to promote smoking and expressed a personal commitment to quitting.
